How election deniers took over elections in small-town Georgia
My year-long investigation into the Republicans takeover of elections in Spalding County has paid dividends — just not enough of them.
On the afternoon of Election Day, my editor and I published our exposé of the takeover of elections in Spalding County. You can read it at Rolling Stone in all its 5,000 word glory.
For the uninitiated, I’ve been reporting on how a small group of Republicans took over the administration of elections in Spalding County, an hour south of Atlanta, since January. The takeover was part of a broader Republican campaign throughout Georgia and the rest of the country to seize power over the administration of elections in the name of election denialism.
Two weeks ago, the election deniers at the center of my investigation in Spalding County were subpoenaed as part of Fani Willis’ probe into Trump campaign efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia.
That’s good but it’s not enough. These people shouldn’t even be in office, but that’s not up to me. It’s up to the people — and specifically Republicans — in Spalding County to put enough pressure on their own party to remove these election deniers from office.
As always, there’s much more where this story came from, and I’ll be sharing some of that in the coming weeks before I dip for Mexico once again. Keep the faith. Do the next right thing.
